This solar plate etching was made from a series of photos taken mid 2023.These works contain images of derelict Williamsons Power Station in Lancaster. Most recently occupied by SupaSkips, the company had their licence revoked for not complying with regulations and left abandoning 13,000 tonnes of waste, an indoor landfill. In December 2023 it caught alight and burned for over two weeks costing Lancaster County Council £900,000 to extinguish. The building has now been condemned and is structurally unsafe due to be demolished, once someone can be found to pay for it. This image shows the image of the very top of the landfill site, someone had added these slabs to create access to the top of the pile giving the view a very surreal feeling.

This artwork is part of a series 'Don't Judge Me'. A rejection of celebrity culture and a reminder of how easily the media and structures of power can control our perception of events and individuals at any given time. Those represented only offer a snapshot of the many that have been unjustly forgotten, judged, cancelled or denied credit for their past endeavours, while frivolous celebrity, fake idols and sensationalism distracts from the void of many listless, unfulfilled human lives. The use of the half-tone dot is in part homage to Hannah Höch, who used that same technology to make social comment in a society that would eventually demonstrate the very worst aspects of human nature. My initial digital illustrations undergo a digital corruption process created through malfunctioning inkjet printers to produce, unplanned, random faults that help to convey how time, technology and human interpretation can change an original image or narrative. Within the structure of my screenprints, the shapes of places that have significant relevance to the protagonist can sometimes be found, hidden within plain sight. The sense of memory is then mapped within the final image and provides a means of authentication.

Hanging arrangement of builder's hand tools. Joining this arrangement of hand tools are objects that provides a clue to the builder's love of birds and the sea – a swallow and a dolphin. The tools are numerous, of different age, with some of them unique hand made. The holding device is a simple length of wood, drilled with holes, with nails in the front to accommodate different tool shapes and sizes.

Made with 35 Himanthalia elongata ‘buttons’, gathered as drift (not harvested), along the tideline over a period of two years. Each seaweed button has been foraged, pressed and dried, before printing without ink to create a unique, sculptural impression in the paper. The composition is inspired by a Victorian pressed seaweed album I viewed at the Aberdeen Art Gallery Treasure Hub. My aim is to subvert the reputation of seaweed as slimy and smelly, by producing a piece that is by contrast, clean, sharp and deceptively simple.

This piece is a mixed media artwork comprising 2 large Linocut works, hand burnished and then overlaid with collage of hand painted mulberry paper grasses, watercolour accents and gold leaf embellishment. “I wanted my piece to symbolise the fragile nature of these beautiful ancient mammals by contrasting the curled pangolin in the spiral of a fossilised ammonite. Thus portraying the delicate thread between the pangolins future existence vs it spiralling towards extinction.”

Magpies are well known for stealing shiny things, but in this case the magpie has gathered up litter, rather than treasure. The dangers of litter and pollution to the natural world are further signified by the skull at the bottom of the print. Printed on 40gsm acid free Thai Mulberry paper with Cranfield Caligo safe wash oil-based ink. This paper is very thin but strong. Signed on the front. This is a limited edition of just 16 prints.

Helen Taylor’s work is inspired by well-known botanical and architectural ‘meeting’ places and by her garden. She portrays the plants as they grow in a collection curated by the gardener, in a human-made landscape. ‘Bred in Captivity, Sheffield Beauties’ is inspired by The Palm House at Sheffield Botanical Gardens, a truly beautiful place. Initially Taylor planned only one print, but decided then to make a Triptych, although each print is a standalone artwork, they can be hung together as each image flows into the next. The Palm House is divided into sections so this arrangement echoes the actual planting. An underlying principle of Taylor’s work is ‘What do we have to lose’, with threats to our natural world from changing climate and habitat loss meaning many plants may become ‘Bred in Captivity.’

I like to include people in my drawings, even if you can't always see their faces (like in my submission where you can only see her curly hair). And pattern is really important to me too - the flowers in this print create a pattern of sorts with all the different shapes. Handmade lino print on Zerkall paper, using Caligo relief ink.

This lino print shows the Victorian ‘Line of Works’ Aqueduct crossing the Molly Brook in Harptree Combe on the Mendip Hills and combines the hard engineered structure with the way nature has, and continues each year, to claim back the space. As a new artist I have been training at Bristol’s Spike Island and this print is from an ongoing series.
