“God told me if I painted that mountain enough, I could have it.” How Georgia O’Keeffe referred to Cerro Pedernal, in New Mexico, ‘her mountain’. A muse to which she returned and rendered multiple times. Often I am struct by Higger Tor’s similar form and aspect, if not scale or stature. This modest, yet striking plateau is located in the east of our beguiling Dark Peak; skirting the boarder of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, seated in the east of the Peak District National Park, a gritstone mini mesa, an Ethel too. Higger Tor is no mountain nor is my depiction a painting, nevertheless, I’m holding to the sentiment; if I draw it enough, could it be mine?

Gardom’s Edge

Solar plate from pencil study

h: 41 w: 41 d: 1 (cms).

Of the Peak District’s gritstone edges, Gardom’s is lesser known and lightly visited. An intensely atmospheric escarpment, littered with ancient artworks and earthworks, vailed under a cover of birch, moss and bracken. If ‘thin places’ exist Gardom’s may well meet the requirements.
