This year, 2025, the city we live in, Altadena, California was decimated by wildfires. Within hours 6,000+ homes were destroyed in a wildfire driven by 100 mile per hour winds. A local firefighter’s home was destroyed and upon finding his wedding ring in the ashes and sharing the news with his wife, a burst of laughter and joy quickly turned into an exhausted embrace. I wanted to capture that moment for all of us who live in my town. The fire stopped four blocks from our house and after 3 and 1/2 months we were able to return, but our town will forever be changed, and the people in it will have to find a way forward. I wanted this embrace to remind us of the most important thing - each other.

Charles White was a prolific artist and influential teacher in the 50’s and 60’s in Los Angeles. He shaped a generation of students at Otis College in Los Angeles at the height of the Civil Rights movement. His African American narrative in image spoke of strength and resilience. I live about one mile from where he lived and I draw influence from his images constantly.

In 2024 my family was able to visit Vienna with our choir. In preparation for our time in Salzburg we researched the history and found the incredible story of an Irish priest who found himself in Salzburg on the way to Jerusalem and ended up becoming the Bishop. He stands out in history, and is called the Geometer, because his calculations convinced him that the world was round at a time the church saw this as heresy. While there I presented this print to the Cathedral in Salzburg as a thank you for letting us sing there.
