This etching is part of a sequence of 35 prints that explore seasonal change on Shetland . Laverick is the Shetland dialect word for sky lark which is the first songbird to start calling in the spring. The darkness of a northern winter has to be lived through in its entirety to appreciate the intensity that long hours and months of darkness has on all living things not least the human psyche. The song of the sky lark is a song of hope that is magnified by the return of the light when darkness of winter that has shed its veil. In the wider context of the U K when many of our birds have been lost through habit loss and environmental degradation the song of the Laverick is an eternal song redolent with the promise of new life that the darkening skies of our current political landscape cannot silence.
