Gabrielle’s Chaos is an emotional response to the devastating floods caused by cyclone Gabrielle that struck the East Coast of New Zealand in 2023. Though I was not directly affected, the harrowing accounts of rising waters and narrow escapes haunted me and left a lasting impression that I felt compelled to express visually. The overall image is deliberately dark and threatening, reflecting the chaos and helplessness that climate-related disasters provoke.Central to the work is a heron, symbolic of longevity but entangled in forestry slash swept down from the hills. A couch, eerily intact, floats among the debris; a direct reference to surreal footage from the floods. The juxtaposition of domestic comfort with destruction underscores the fragility of what we take for granted. Survivors recounted cutting through ceilings to escape. This print is both a witness and a warning. A commentary on climate change and environmental neglect.
