Between 2024 and 2025, I was the resident artist with the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Observing nearly 20 operations, from spinal surgeries to craniotomies, I produced over 80 drawings from life. These informed a series of paintings and monotypes, such as ‘Moments of Pause’, an amalgamation of all the moments witnessed. This work celebrates the surgical team whilst helping patients build a narrative to help them understand their experiences. After observing only a handful of operations, it became clear the message I wanted to convey: in an exceptionally sterile and clinical environment, what stood out was the humanity, compassion, and teamwork.
