Monotype on 270gsm paper

h: 45 w: 45 d: 1 (cms).

This is the first in what is now a steadily growing grey monotype series featuring rescue dogs and cats. A lot of my work is quite precise and takes a long time to create so I wanted to allow myself to introduce some more immediate gestural mark making within a concentrated period of time and really enjoy the physicality of the ink before the reveal moment. I am a lifelong lover of dogs (especially ones with sad stories and scruffy faces), so wanted to try to communicate more than just an accurate physical representation of each animal. This first piece is called No Home, No Bone as the rest of the series depicts specific rescue animals all looking to be rehomed (with permission and a thank you donation to the rescue charity, of course). The image is 40x40cm.

Winter Reset

Hand-finished sugar lift etching

h: 38 w: 38 d: 1 (cms).

This is entirely handmade from start to finish - I painted what felt like a million dots on the aluminium plate to slowly create the image and then slowly created the different areas of tone by painting many, many more dots combined with many dips in saline copper sulphate. I wanted to try to capture and convey the magic of the woods in winter, when it looks like everything's dead but of course it's only sleeping. When the sunlight is weak but golden and has the power to suddenly transform everything it touches. Depending on where you're looking at the print from, the golden light is sometimes almost invisible, where the trees and scrub look monochrome, like on a grey day, but as your viewpoint changes, you'll get a flash of almost total gold. The title refers to the woods resetting themselves and their power to reset us in the depths of winter too. Each print in the edition will of course be slightly different to the others, due to the inking, wiping and hand-finishing processes.
